Themed square foot gardening – FREE PRINTABLES

Salsa Garden, Pizza Garden, Salad Garden!


*Disclaimer, I am a beginner living in a temperate environment (USDA Zone 9a equivalent).


Square foot gardening is a fantastic way to grow a variety of herbs, vegetables, and fruits in limited spaces. One exciting aspect of this gardening method is the ability to create themed gardens. I’m exploring a few ideas here and I will update this post once the garden is in an growing! 

Salsa Garden – Peppers, Chilies, Tomatoes, Onions, Basil etc. 
A Salsa garden is perfect for those who love zesty flavors. Plant tomatoes, peppers, onions, and cilantro to create a vibrant mix of ingredients for homemade salsa. I basically already have this with my Tomato beds which you can see below, I could swap out the beans for peppers.

Pizza Garden – Tomatoes, Basil, Oregano, Mushrooms etc.
A Pizza garden is sure to delight pizza enthusiasts. Grow tomatoes, basil, oregano, and bell peppers to make fresh and flavorful toppings for your homemade pies. I saw someone on YouTube using mushroom growing medium as mulch under fruit trees and harvesting mushrooms from the mulch, I wonder if it would work with annual plants as well? I might have to experiment and report back! 

Salad Garden – Lettuce, Cucumbers, Radishes, Cherry Tomatoes etc. 
A Salad garden is a great choice for a quick lunch option. Plant lettuce, spinach, kale, cucumbers and radishes to have a constant supply of fresh salad ingredients. The cherry toms and the cucumbers will need some supports, cages or trellises so I put them all in a line to make that easier. One online blog suggested carrots in this garden but I’m not sure carrots would work as they take a lot longer to grow than the other things in this garden. You can add or subtract square feet to suit the garden that you have. I'm putting this bed near the kitchen for easy salad making so there is not much space.
